Using an efficient system of stock control, ordering the correct level of stock to suit requirements, and usage in date order, should avoid items going out of date. It is good practice to label products with the date of opening, establish procedures for regular checks on stock levels and a system of rotation to use oldest first, and where necessary disposal of items that have gone out of date. The recommended timeframe for use from the date of first opening is 2 years, if stored and handled correctly. Consider purchasing pack sizes best suited to speed of consumption, especially for detergents, so that once opened they are used more quickly and there is less chance of them becoming out of date, or contaminated. Care should always be taken when opening items not to contaminate the product with dust or similar, which may have accumulated on the outer packaging during storage. We have seen examples where fabric has become heavily soiled in this way and should be avoided. Detergents Subject to the provision of optimum storage conditions as outlined above, shelf life can be up to 4 years if the product remains unopened. Once opened, provided that packaging is securely resealed, then a recommended shelf life is 18-24 months from first opening. Contamination of detergents during use can also be a problem, care should be taken to avoid this occurring. This can happen if packaging is not properly sealed, or by scoops and tub lids being mixed between products such as IEC and ECE type detergents – the result is often small quantities of OBA in ECE detergents. |
